He blinded me with science!

The vast majority of my research and testing has related to the selection and use of astronomical filters, but I have dabbled in a few other areas such as CCD performance.  My results from past tests can be found on the Test Report page.  Any other papers that I've written can be found here.  Some of the material in these papers can be found in my Magazine Articles, but in a simplified form.  If you'd like me to explain anything in my papers, please feel free to contact me.

Cheers,

Jim T.

"Astronomy Filter Research" , 5.1Mb A repackaging of my original 2010 web-paper on filters into a single PDF file.
"Band Pass Filters For Visual & Video Astronomy - Part 1" , 3.9Mb I revamped my original filter research to expand it to use with an astro-video camera as well as visual observing.  Added were filters specifically meant for use with imaging.  Part 1 contains the body of the paper.
"Band Pass Filters For Visual & Video Astronomy - Part 2" , 4.7Mb Part 2 contains the appendices that accompanies the paper.  The appendices are mostly the images that were collected from my Mallincam during testing with a large assortment of different LP filters.  The target was M42 Orion Nebula.
"A Computational Method For Evaluating Astronomical Filters - Part 1" , 2.7Mb A fairly detailed account of the analytical method I developed for the evaluation of deep-sky filter performance, both when used visually and with an astro-video camera.  Part 1 contains the body of the paper.

"A Computational Method For Evaluating Astronomical Filters - Part 2" , 3.3Mb

Part 2 contains the appendices that accompany the body of the paper.  The appendices contain numerous graphs and tables of results from the analysis applied to my entire database of 100+ filters.

"VirtualDub and Video Astronomy", 3.0Mb

A tutorial I put together on how to use the freeware video editing software VirtualDub to apply various filters to your live NSN broadcast.  To download the associated VirtualDub installation including filters click here (4.6Mb).
