Sky conditions supposed to be excellent tonight, too bad it is almost a full moon and the sky is totally washed out for deepsky viewing.  It is however an excellent opportunity for me to systematically compare the impact of different colour filters on the visible contrast of the Moon.  I used my Lumicon filter selector to rattle through my selection of filters.  Blue #80a and a single line polarizer (half of my variable polarizer) provided the best improvement in image contrast.

  • 30% clear, 1/5 transparency, 2/5 seeing

  • ED80 mounted on Orion Atlas EQ-G (hand paddle)

  • backyard, Ottawa, Canada

  • terminator ~ 60° W

Seeing and transparency were supposed to be basically nil, but after kids in bed I noticed that I could clearly see the moon, albeit through a thin layer of high altitude cloud.  I figured I'd go out anyway.  You can tell the images are taken through thin cloud as they're somewhat washed-out.

Another very cold night (-20degC).  Mount worked well, but laptop struggling.  Never did get very steady seeing, but then again the forecast didn't call for it.
