I’ve been hunting for a good location to image the pre-first quarter moon. My house and lots of trees block my view to the west from my yard, so a convenient alternative is required. The parking lot at work is in a fairly open area with a clear view to about 5-10deg above the western horizon. The forecast this morning was pretty good for tonight so I loaded my gear into the truck, and set it up quickly after work. It was still twilight at the time I imaged, so the contrast between sky and moon was poor. You can see an improvement in the images as it got darker outside (LX10 images were recorded after ED80). This is especially true along the terminator, where for the earlier images I had to manually edit the image in the area so that it transitioned smoothly to black. Seeing was not great (less than 3/5), probably due to the moon being low on the horizon plus the large amount of dust in the air from the adjacent roadway. All-in-all the parking lot location seems like it could work. |
